Euroflam successes

Below are listed, profiles of the present Users at the three Partner Laboratories, and those who have completed their training/research periods, within the present phase of the project – EuroFlam3.

In addition, there are selected profiles of those who have already completed their training periods during the two previous project phases. These profiles clearly demonstrate the potential of the programme and exemplify the successes, which may be achieved.

Sustainable Energy Limited

Sustainable Energy Limited (SEL) is a Rapidly Growing Independent Consultancy Offering Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Products and Services. SEL's Combustion and Biomass Team Have All Benefited From an Access Period as EuroFlam Visiting Investigators at Either Cardiff University or the IFRF. You Can Learn More About Their Experiences and Subsequent Achievements Below.

Based in South Wales, with offices in both Cardiff and Swansea, the SEL team consists of highly qualified energy, technical, environmental and finance professionals. Their current focus is to specialise in small to medium sized renewable energy installations.

SEL are currently developing a number of innovative products utilising several renewable energy sources, with biomass-derived energy forming a significant part of the company’s research activities. Sustainable Energy also provides technical and economic feasibility studies for renewable energy implementation covering small-scale biomass, solar, wind, landfill gas and hydro schemes.

David Thomas
David gained a degree in Applied Physics with Electronics at the University of Hull, UK, in 1994 and completed a Masters in Energy Studies at Cardiff University in 1995. David researched clean coal and biomass combustion on the EuroFlam programme at the IFRF. After leaving the IFRF David started work at British Steel as an industrially-based research engineer, gaining an MPhil from the University of Wales, Swansea. David then started worked as a consultant for Swansea Energy Agency, providing energy and information technology related services.

David was a founding Director of Sustainable Energy Limited and is a member of the UK Government Environmental & Energy Helpline panel of experts and an approved Design Advice Consultant.

Gabriel Gallagher
Gabriel joined the EuroFlam programme in 1996, studying coal classification at the IFRF in the Netherlands. Skills such as experimental techniques, computational modelling and mathematical analysis gained at the IFRF put Gabriel in good stead for doctoral research in the Division of Mechanical Engineering and Energy Studies, Cardiff University, UK.

On completion of his PhD, Gabriel joined SEL as Technical Director. His main duties include the management of a number of major biomass energy development projects and acting as the industrial supervisor for a PhD project.

Jens Hubert
After gaining a Masters degree in engineering at Bochum University, Germany, Jens joined the EuroFlam team at Cardiff University in April 1999. His six-month training placement introduced him to laser-based flow diagnostic techniques which he employed to study the flow pattern of the precessing vortex core in swirling gas flames. In June 2000 Jens joined SEL as an Energy Consultant in biomass, specialising in pyrolysis and gasification. In addition to his consultation activities, Jens has recently started a PhD programme at Cardiff University researching gasification technology.

Andrew Jolly
After his degree, Andrew became one of the first EuroFlam investigators. He carried out a nine month placement at Cardiff University in 1994, studying the fuel spray characteristics of industrial-scale atomisers. EuroFlam provided Andrew with the opportunity to develop skills in rig design and construction, experimental techniques and computational analysis.
Andrew subsequently gained an MPhil and PhD at Cardiff University and spent two periods working for the Ford Motor Company. Since joining Sustainable Energy in September 2000 as a Renewable Energy Consultant, Andrew has begun managing an EU co-ordinated project focusing on on-line cleaning technologies for a ceramic heat exchanger. His interest in 'clean-fuel' transport has led him to specialise in all aspects of fuel cell development and biofuels.
